I was born in Thwing a small village at the top of the East Yorkshire Wolds. The centers of activity at the time were the church and the pub,
Although we had no electricity or tap water we did have football and cricket teams whist drives and Saturday dances,
A small men's club held in the church hall for those of us who were too young or didn’t want to use the pub,
There was also a shop a post office
The Raincliffe Arms pictured here as it is today was sold by Cameron's Brewery about 1976, After some extensive refurbishment work adding a dinning area moving the bar to a central position and scrapping the “outside” toilets was renamed The Rampant Horse.
The old granary above the arch left hand side used to be the area depot for Foxes Sacks where local farmers could hire their Grain sacks to store the corn in before the days of corn drying plants and the huge silos as used today.

A Brief History of Thwing.
Thwing is a small parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire 10 miles from the market town of Great Driffield and 8 miles inland from the seaside town of Bridlington.
Predominantly farm land there are no longer any trades other than farming left in the village.
The origin of the name seems unclear but was adopted as the title name for the Lordship of Thwenge the first record of which is Sir Robert de Thwenge during the reign of Henry 111,
A descendent of Sir Robert, Marmaduke de Thwenge became Vicar of the parish in 1301 to 1312 and Robert de Thwenge 1339 to 1351.
The Church dedicated to All Saints which was first established in Norman times sports some impressive octagonal columns below four pointed arches that support the roof between the nave and the isle ,
The semicircular arch to the chancel sits on nicely carved pattresses on top of the piers.
Above the door in the porch is a carving on the lintel depicting the Lamb of God or the “Agnes Dei”,
Over this is a fine semicircular arch of carved stone rests upon finely chiseled twisted columns cut into the stonework
Thomas Lamplugh who was born in the village in 1615 became Archbishop of York in 1688 presented the communion set to the Church that is still in use today.
A marble plaque on the chancel wall commemorates his life.
The Wesleyan Chapel a brick building was erected in 1639 fell into disrepair after the 1st world war and was eventually demolished in the 1970’s.
The Primitive Methodist Chapel (1840 ) also of brick construction was sold about the same time and is now a dwelling, as is the school built in 1840 and closed when a new combined 1st school was opened in neighboring village of Wold Newton, Older children then had to travel 7 miles to Filey County Secondary School.

Another notable person, John Twenge was born in 1319 in Thwing Died 10 October 1379 of natural causes. Canonised by Boniface IX in 1404. In the fourteenth century he was Prior of St. Mary's Bridlington Priory and had a reputation for great holiness and miraculous powers during his life.
He was the last English saint to be canonised before the Protestant Reformation.
King Henry V attributed his victory at Agincourt to the intercession in heaven of this Saint John of Bridlingtron and of Saint John of Beverley.
Women in difficult labour pray to St John of Bridlington for intercession,
He is also associated with the local fishing industry. Five sailorsfrom Hartlepool were in danger of drowning, and called for the help of Saint John; the holy prior appeared to them at sea, wearing his habit. He led the men safely to shore.
